Union House Richmond Rooftop Bar has everything from the downstairs front bar serving 10 taps of craft and classics to an upstairs dining room with pub and bistro menu. Up on the roof, there’s our terrace bar that overlooks all of Richmond!
Union House is the home to food at University. It is a common place to meet up with friends and often a free BBQ every Tuesday!
Union House Melbourne is a newly restored 19th-century pub in the heart of the city. The team behind it, including Steve Rowley, Matt Vero, Cal Hitchens and Will Benjamin, are no strangers to restoration projects – they’re also responsible for the 150-year-old Marquis of Lorne in Fitzroy and the Mount Erica Hotel in Prahran.
Union House is a heritage-listed hotel on Swan Street in Melbourne. It features comfy booth seating and a sprawling tiled bar. The approachable double-level space includes Victorian Ash acoustic timber roof panels, which help balance out the noise in the ground-level main bar. Union House is the perfect place to relax and enjoy a drink with friends.
Designed by Alex Lake (Tall Timber, Marquis), downstairs you’ve got the classic tiled front-bar, high stools, warm timber ceilings, plus a rarity for Melbourne interior design: carpet. Upstairs there’s a slightly more upmarket dining room, with a big old Cheminees Philippe firepeggplant with tahini labna and hazelnut, and a beef carpaccio with fried Jerusalem artichokes.
With two floors of dining, Union House offers something for everyone. The upstairs 65 person dining room is more refined, while the 70 seat rooftop terrace is perfect for enjoying a sunny day or night out. The focus of the restaurant is the freestanding Cheminees Philippe fireplace, which makes for a cozy and romantic setting. Union House also has an extensive drinks menu, including cocktails, wine and beer.
They have a selection of local craft beers on tap, as well as a range of food options including upstairs bistro fare and downstairs pub grub. Our head chef Jacob Swain comes from Marquis, so you know the food is going to be good. We’re also excited to have Christopher Hitchens and Benjamin handling the booze – so come down and join them for a drink!
It offers a unique experience, as it has 10 taps offering smaller Victorian brews, such as Stomping Ground, Hook Turn Pilsner and Mornington Peninsula Brewing’s Pale Ale. And there are a couple of cocktails on tap, including an Espresso Martini. Wine options cover a Mornington Garagiste le Stagiaire pinot gris, ¬a Barossa Nick Spencer pinot rose and rarer orange drops. Union House Melbourne is perfect for those who want to enjoy a good beer or wine in a relaxed and comfortable setting.
The menu includes classic pub fare like veal schnitzel and a rockling burger, as well as more unique options like eggplant with tahini labna and hazelnut. There are also five different steaks to choose from, including an 800-gram rib eye. And for dessert? Try the sticky date pudding with butterscotch sauce. Happy hour runs Monday to Friday from 4pm until 6pm, so make sure you stop by for some great deals on drinks and food.
