The Shady Lady Fitzroy bar is a classic watering hole in Melbourne, Australia. Tasselled lampshades cast a soft glow over the long bar lined with stools. It’s comfortable and familiar inside 36 Johnston Street – dimly lit with worn concrete floors, dark teal paint on the walls and wood panelling for that lived-in feel. It’s the perfect Melbourne bar for locals to meet up or travellers looking for an authentic Australian experience.
The Shady Lady is a Fitzroy cocktail bar with an eclectic, welcoming vibe. The owners Rosie & Georgina Maughan & MandyJo Reinier wanted the space to feel like “a cool grandma’s house.” They succeeded. It has mismatched furniture and vintage decorations from grandmas house that will make you feel at home as soon as you walk in the door.
This is really a dive bar like no other – think orange tassel-covered lampshades, blue painted brick, and a leather-wrapped bar. Their frozen Piña Coladas are a perfect blend of coconut, pineapple juice, ice and a generous glug of rum. Is it garnished with a maraschino cherry. Margaritas come frozen, on ice or served up, and it doesn’t matter which way you have it, your lime-and-tequila-based cocktail is consistently balanced, never saccharine and always with a half-salt rim.
If you prefer something different, the drinks menu also has tins of beers from Colonial Brewing, Stomping Ground and Young Henrys on offer. For the more adventurous drinkers try Bodriggy Cider (on tap) and Napoleone Cider.
