Cherry Bar

The Cherry Bar is a Melbourne CBD bar founded in December 1999 by former Cosmic Psychos drummer Bill Walsh. Located on ACDC Lane (off Flinders Lane between Russell St and Exhibition St), the bar replaced existing artists studios in the building to make a rock music venue that has become a popular concert after-party venue for touring bands and their crews.

The Cherry Bar is one of the few venues left in Melbourne where you can walk up to the front door, buy your tickets at the door, then enter through an unpretentious room with red walls, low ceilings, no frills – just booze and live tunes. It’s very much like what all bars used to be before they became “venue experiences”.

Used to be known as ‘The Punters Club’, but later renamed to Cherry Bar when owner Bill Walsh took over in 1998. Known for its eclectic mix of live music and DJ nights, Cherry has hosted everyone from locals to international superstars like Noel Gallagher and Lady Gaga and remains at the forefront of Melbourne nightlife today.

Recently as one of Melbourne’s most beloved rock’n’roll joints, announced that it is moving to a new location. The bar, which is known for its laid-back vibe and stripped-down aesthetic, will be relocating to the old Boney site on Little Collins Street. With a capacity for 260 people and a seven-day, 24-hour licence, Cherry Bar is sure to continue being one of the city’s hottest spots.
